Five Paragraph Essay, Part 1 Of 3

Read Time:2 Minute, 51 Second

Hello, my name is John. In this article, I will explain how to write a five paragraph essay. Specifically, I will talk about essay structure and the introduction paragraph. This article is part 1 of 3. Let us begin by looking at an example five paragraph essay. This example essay is called “The Benefits of Exercise.” Many of us are physically active. We enjoy the benefits of exercise. Exercise is good for us physically, mentally and socially.

Exercise is good for us physically. Exercise helps us to lose fat. It also helps us to build muscle. Exercise is good for us mentally. It helps us to reduce stress. It also helps us to build discipline.

Exercise is good for us socially. We can meet new friends at the gym, and usually we are kinder when we feel good physically. In conclusion, we benefit physically, mentally and socially from exercise. For these reasons, we should exercise regularly. Let us look more closely at the details of this essay. Here is the structure for a five paragraph essay. The first paragraph of the essay is the introduction paragraph.

The second paragraph of the essay is body paragraph 1. The third paragraph of the essay is body paragraph 2. The fourth paragraph of the essay is body paragraph 3. The last paragraph of the five paragraph essay is the conclusion paragraph. Now, let us look more closely at the first paragraph… …the introduction paragraph. There are two parts to the introduction paragraph: There is a general introduction to the essay, and there is a thesis statement. Let us look more closely at these two parts. I want to write a small essay about the benefits of exercise.

My general introduction to the essay looks like this: “Many of us are physically active. We enjoy the benefits of exercise.” These are general statements about exercise. Next, in my thesis statement, I state specifically what my essay will focus on: “Exercise is good for us physically, mentally and socially.” “Exercise” is the main essay topic. I will not discuss healthy food or sports clothing as a main topic, for example. I will only talk about exercise. “good” is the controlling idea for the essay.

I will not discuss how exercise can be difficult or how it can be expensive, for example. I will only talk about how exercise is good. “physically, mentally and socially” are the outline of specific subtopics that I will discuss in the essay. Exercise is a very big main topic. I will not talk about everything related to exercise. For example, I will not talk about how to choose good exercise equipment. I will only discuss some physical, mental and social benefits of exercise. Please remember: The thesis statement is the last sentence of the introduction paragraph.

It is not the first sentence or a middle sentence. It is the last sentence of the introduction paragraph. The thesis statement is the most important sentence of your essay because it is a map that provides a purpose and direction for your essay. Your essay must follow this map. It must follow the thesis statement.

Now that I have a good introduction paragraph, let us look at the second paragraph of a five paragraph essay… To learn about body paragraphs, please go to the next article: Five Paragraph Essay Part 2 of 3.
